According to the 2024 index by the Canadian think tank Fraser Institute, Morocco has emerged as the leader in economic freedoms among North African countries. The country improved its position by seven places, now ranking 90th out of 165 nations with a score of 6.46 out of 10.
In the North African context, Morocco stands ahead of Tunisia (118th with a score of 5.94), Mauritania (120th with 5.91), Egypt (142nd with 5.36), Libya (157th with 4.65), and Algeria (161st with 4.64).
The index assesses economic freedom across five main areas: government size, legal system and property rights security, sound money management, international trade freedom, and regulation.
In terms of government size, Morocco scored 6.95 points, placing it 66th globally. It ranked 70th in the legal system and property rights security category with a score of 5.31. Additionally, Morocco achieved over six points in sound money management and over seven points in international trade freedom, ranking 90th in this area.
The index comprises 26 components across the five main domains, with a total of 44 distinct variables sourced from third-party organizations, such as the International Country Risk Guide, the Global Competitiveness Report, and the World Bank’s Doing Business project. This ensures that subjective judgments do not influence the index.
Globally, Hong Kong topped the list with 8.58 points, followed by Singapore, Switzerland, New Zealand, Denmark, and the United States. Among Arab countries, the UAE ranked highest at 45th globally with 7.39 points, followed by Jordan, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar. Conversely, Venezuela ranked last at 165th with 3.02 points, along with Zimbabwe, Sudan, and Syria.
The report highlights that in countries with high economic freedom, only 1% of the population lives in extreme poverty (defined as less than $2.15 per day), compared to approximately 30% in countries with lower levels of economic freedom.
