With nearly 2 million tonnes of soft wheat imported from the European Union for the 2024/2025 season, Morocco strengthens its position as the second-largest importer, only behind Nigeria.
The Kingdom has made a remarkable performance in the agrifood sector, ranking as the second-largest importer of soft wheat from the European Union for the 2024/2025 trade season.
According to the latest report from the European Commission, Morocco imported a total of 1,995,567 tonnes of soft wheat during this period, a decrease compared to the 3,583,330 tonnes from the previous year.
This performance places it just behind Nigeria, the top importer with 2,249,915 tonnes, and ahead of Algeria, which completes the podium with 1,346,451 tonnes.
Beyond wheat, Morocco has also strengthened its position in the barley market, ranking second among European importers with 582,323 tonnes imported by the end of March, well below the 921,104 tonnes recorded in the previous season. Saudi Arabia remains the leader in barley imports, with impressive volumes of 953,886 tonnes for the same period, a significant increase from the 155,884 tonnes of the previous year.
The impact of global dynamics is evident in the overall figures. The European Union has exported a total of 15,683,775 tonnes of soft wheat and 3,763,138 tonnes of barley from the start of the current season to the end of March. At the same time, it has imported 6,313,863 tonnes of soft wheat and 931,214 tonnes of barley.
In the landscape of soft wheat suppliers to the European Union, Ukraine has emerged as the main player, exporting 4,096,794 tonnes, followed by Canada and Moldova, with 896,825 tonnes and 475,821 tonnes, respectively. This trend is mirrored in barley imports, where Ukraine has also taken the lead, supplying 396,624 tonnes, ahead of the United Kingdom and Moldova.
A special mention must be made regarding durum wheat semolina, a strategic product for Morocco, which has regained its place among the main suppliers to the European Union with 914 tonnes exported, up from 709 tonnes in the previous season. The total figures for semolina imported by the EU from July 2024 to March 2025 amount to 3,047 tonnes, with Turkey and Egypt ranked second and third, supplying 391 tonnes and 338 tonnes, respectively.
