Morocco recently explored opportunities to welcome Kenyan teachers, particularly English language instructors, following a high-level visit by Kenya’s Prime Cabinet Secretary and Cabinet Secretary for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs, Musalia Mudavadi, earlier this week.
During his discussions with Morocco’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Nasser Bourita, Mudavadi expressed optimism about expanding employment opportunities for Kenyan educators in Morocco, where English is gaining greater significance.
“This is no ordinary visit,” Bourita said during the press conference following the meeting. “It coincides with the celebration of the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between our two countries.”
The meeting explored diverse areas and opportunities for collaboration while strengthening Morocco’s role as a key pillar in the African landscape.
The diplomatic get-together culminated in the signature of multiple Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) between Morocco and Kenya, addressing areas like housing, trade, youth programs, and institutional partnerships.
Further educational talks between Rabat and Nairobi included the potential expansion of scholarships for Kenyan students studying in Morocco.
Morocco was ranked 76th worldwide on the English Proficiency Index (EPI) last year, placing it among nations with relatively low levels of English proficiency.
Despite this, Morocco has been undergoing a remarkable shift towards embracing English, mirroring a worldwide trend. This change is evident in various sectors, including education, media, and technology.
The shift is supported greatly by the growing use of the language in digital content and social media platforms among the youth.
Face to face with the increasing demand for English proficiency, the country is actively seeking skilled educators from abroad to support and enhance its language education programs.
Beyond education, the visit also led to agreements on housing, trade, youth, and institutional cooperation, strengthening ties between Morocco and Kenya. Such partnerships strive to deepen bilateral ties and promote mutual growth across diverse sectors.
