A team of Moroccan university students received the Grand Prize for Innovation at the global finals of the prestigious Huawei ICT Competition 2024-2025, held in Shenzhen, China, from May 19 to 25.
The award-winning project, “NovaOR Out Of The Box”, was developed by Ayman Amokrane and Maryeme Hassani, students at the Faculty of Science and Technology in Errachidia, part of Moulay Ismail University.
Under the guidance of Professor Yousef Farhaoui, the team impressed judges with an artificial intelligence-powered solution designed to enhance healthcare facility management through predictive analytics technologies.
More than 200,000 students from top universities across the globe participated in the competition, which included national, regional, and global phases, all hosted by Chinese tech giant Huawei.
The victory puts Moulay Ismail University on the global map for technological innovation and underscores Morocco’s growing reputation as a regional and global hub for digital talent and innovation.
In an interview with Morocco’s state news agency MAP, Professor Farhaoui described the win as the result of collective effort, crediting the Ministry of Higher Education, Moulay Ismail University, and the Faculty of Science and Technology of Errachidia for their unwavering support. He noted that the team came in first in both national and African competitions before achieving the global title.
The accomplishment, Farhaoui added, highlights the relevance of Morocco’s national digital strategy, as well as the country’s rising influence in the tech sector, under the leadership of King Mohammed VI.
Moroccan teams participated in two other categories during the global finals with projects “Cloud” by a team from the National Institute of Posts and Telecommunications (INPT), and “Computing” by another group from the Faculty of Science and Technology in Errachidia.
Finalist teams received extensive training and support through Huawei’s eTalent platform and close mentorship from both academic advisors and Huawei experts, following a competitive selection process that began in September 2024.
Huawei’s global ICT Academy, which runs the competition, trains and certifies thousands of students annually in over 110 countries. To date, it has equipped more than 1.3 million students worldwide with advanced tech skills, a number that continues to grow as it nurtures the next generation of digital leaders.
