Morocco will suspend its exports of frozen sardines starting February 1, to preserve domestic supply and curb price pressures, according to Zakia Driouich, the government official overseeing the fisheries sector, Reuters reported.
Speaking before parliament late Tuesday, Driouich said the decision had been precipitated by a noticeable decline in sardine availability on the local market. She did not specify how long the export ban would be in place.
Sardines are a staple food for Moroccan households and a major component of the country’s fishing economy. Morocco is the world’s largest exporter of sardines.
Pelagic species, led by sardines, account for around 80% of Morocco’s coastal fish resources, compared with just 20% for white fish, Driouich told lawmakers.
