Morocco is evaluating an invitation from the Chinese government to negotiate a free trade agreement with China, Minister of Industry and Trade Ryad Mezzour told Bloomberg in a recent interview. Beijing has approached Morocco about a possible trade pact, but no formal negotiations have begun, Mezzour said.
Morocco has spent the past two decades developing export-oriented industries, including automotive manufacturing, aerospace, and battery production, and has already received substantial investments from Chinese companies.
The country also maintains an extensive network of trade agreements, notably with the European Union and the United States, which have helped attract foreign investment and support export growth.
A free trade agreement could improve access for Moroccan exporters to the Chinese market as well as support the country’s efforts to diversify its trade partnerships beyond Europe, according to Mezzour.
But, he said, “We need to evaluate what impact it would have on our economy” and consider how such an agreement could affect Morocco’s existing trade relationships.
Mezzour said any decision on a trade agreement with China would require consultations with Moroccan businesses, industry groups, and government stakeholders.
