Credit Agricole du Maroc, one of Morocco’s largest banks, has signed an agreement with UN Women to increase access to financial education and enhance economic inclusion for women working in Morocco’s fishing industry, according to a statement by the UN on Wednesday.
The partnership is part of the “Support for Economic Inclusion of Women in the Fishing Sector” initiative, backed by Morocco’s Secretariat of State for Maritime Fisheries and UN Women.
Supported by the Directorate-General for Cooperation and Immigration of the Balearic Islands government, the project furthers Morocco’s national Halieutis strategy – an initiative to increase the sustainability of the fishing industry.
Under the agreement, the two organizations will assist fisherwomen in Tetouan, M’diq, and Martil by improving their access to management tools, financing, and market opportunities. The initiative is intended to enhance their participation in the local economy while fostering sustainable fishing value chains.
Credit Agricole du Maroc’s Center for Studies and Research (CERCAM) will play a key role in delivering financial education programs. The programs will equip women with essential skills in resource management and responsible credit use.
In addition, the bank’s subsidiaries, ARDI Foundation for Microfinance and Tamwil El Fellah for meso-credit -loans for small businesses,- will offer financial support tailored to their needs.
The agreement also promotes the creation of cooperatives, economic interest groups, and professional networks among fisherwomen. The collective approach would help them pool resources, cut costs, and strengthen their bargaining power.
Cooperatives will also receive modern equipment to adopt sustainable fishing practices and become significant economic players in their communities.
