Morocco head coach Mohamed Ouahbi said Tuesday’s 4-0 victory over Madagascar achieved its objectives both in terms of performance and preparation, as the Atlas Lions continue their build-up to the FIFA World Cup.
Speaking after the friendly at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Sports Complex in Rabat, Ouahbi said the match was designed to evaluate tactical plans, test different combinations and assess the readiness of the squad ahead of the tournament.
“The important thing was to win, perform well and apply the instructions,” Ouahbi told reporters. “We made many changes, which is unusual, but we tested several options and came away with important conclusions. I also liked the mentality within the group and the strong understanding between the players.”
The coach said the technical staff deliberately rotated players to gather as much information as possible before the start of the World Cup, adding that the overall performance provided encouraging signs.
Ouahbi also addressed the fitness status of several players. He said defender Nayef Aguerd remains on a rehabilitation program and that a final decision on his availability will be made at the appropriate time. Marouane Saâdane, meanwhile, is in good condition and remains an option for the coaching staff.
The Morocco coach confirmed that Neil El Aynaoui missed the match due to illness, while goalkeeper Yassine Bounou was not risked after experiencing shoulder discomfort.
Ouahbi praised the supporters who attended the match and explained that Brahim Diaz’s brief appearance was partly intended to allow the midfielder to interact with fans before the team departs for the World Cup.
He also highlighted the growing competition within the squad, describing it as a positive development.
“Every player believes he deserves to start, and that is a good thing,” he said. “Our objective is to build a complete group that believes it can contribute at any moment, while preparing physically and mentally as well as tactically.”
Despite the comprehensive victory, Ouahbi stressed that preparations remain ongoing. He expects the upcoming friendly against Norway to provide a different challenge and help the team address new tactical situations before opening its World Cup campaign.
“We have a solid defense, but Norway will put us in different situations, and that is what we need before the World Cup,” he said. “We want to be ready for every possible scenario because the objective is to reach the tournament in the best possible condition. Our first major test will be Brazil.”
