If you have an impounded car in Dubai, the period is not always something you have to sit out. Decree No. 29 of 2015 puts a price on the days: AED 100 per day for a light vehicle, AED 200 for a heavy one, and you pay only for the days still left to run rather than the whole period.
Whether that is worth paying comes down to two numbers, and most people only know one of them. The daily rate is fixed. The length of the impound is not, and in Dubai it runs anywhere from a week to three months.
Start with the length, not the rate
The impound period is set by the violation, and the spread is far wider than the seven days most guides discuss. These are the periods published in Dubai Police’s own black points table.
| Violation | Fine | Black points | Impound |
|---|---|---|---|
| Expired driving licence, expired registration, or expired tyres | AED 500 | 4 | 7 days |
| Exceeding the speed limit by up to 60 km/h | AED 1,500 | 6 | 15 days |
| Running a red light, light vehicle or motorbike | AED 1,000 | 12 | 30 days |
| Exceeding the speed limit by more than 60 or 80 km/h | AED 2,000 | 12 | 30 days |
| Driving in a way that endangers others, or under the influence | AED 2,000 or by court | 23 | 60 days |
| Driving with no number plates | AED 3,000 | 23 | 90 days |
The rate is the same all the way down that table. The bill is not. A week is the kind of sum most people pay without much thought, while the lower rows reach figures that would cover a used car deposit, and that is where paying stops being automatic for anyone.
What it actually costs to end it early
The rate applies per remaining day, not per day of the original period. If a thirty-day impound is on day twenty-two when you go to deal with it, you are buying back eight days at AED 800, not thirty at AED 3,000. It is the single most useful line in the decree and it is almost never quoted, which leads people to write the whole period off as unaffordable when the remaining stretch is cheap.
Release also carries three conditions beyond the money. All fines on the traffic file have to be settled, the violation itself has to be put right, and any further condition set by Dubai Police has to be met. That middle one has teeth: if the impound was for expired tyres, new tyres go on before the car comes out. You cannot pay to drive away in the same faulty car.
One figure to ignore while you work this out. Search this subject and you will be told repeatedly that impounded cars cost AED 50 a day. That is a real number in the decree, but it is the storage charge that starts accruing once the period has already ended and the car is still sitting there. It has nothing to do with getting the car out sooner, and quoting it makes the decision look half as expensive as it is.
When money is not the way out
For the most serious categories the decree replaces the daily rate with a fixed sum, and they are not small:
- AED 100,000 for taking part in a road race without a police permit
- AED 50,000 for riding a recreational motorcycle on a paved road
- AED 10,000 for substantial speed or noise modifications, for reckless driving, or for escaping from police
Two other cases have no price at all. Where fines on the vehicle exceed AED 6,000, the car comes out when the fines are paid. And where the impound followed a licence that had been expired for more than three months, the car is released on renewal of the licence, not on payment. Paperwork is the only exit, so turning up with a card in hand achieves nothing until the licence renewal is done.
The car does not have to sit in a police yard
Dubai Police run a Smart Impound service that lets the vehicle serve its period at an address of your choosing, usually home. Technicians fit a GPS device, the location is monitored throughout, and unauthorised movement raises an alert. You return at the end to have the device removed.
It costs AED 400 plus AED 20 in Knowledge and Innovation fees, with AED 100 per additional month if the period is extended, and outstanding fines have to be cleared before it is approved. You request it in the Dubai Police app under Traffic Services.
Be clear about what it buys, because the name misleads people. Smart Impound does not let you drive. It keeps your car off a compound, in the shade, on your own driveway. It does nothing at all about getting you to work, which is a separate problem with a separate answer.
Rent or pay: what the numbers say
Economy cars on OneClickDrive currently run from around AED 39 a day in Dubai, and the monthly rate is where the comparison really bites.
| Impound length | Buy the days back | Rent an economy car |
|---|---|---|
| 7 days | AED 700 | from about AED 275 |
| 30 days | AED 3,000 | from about AED 1,145 |
| 60 days | AED 6,000 | from about AED 2,290 |
For an ordinary car this is not close, and it gets less close the longer the period runs. Renting is roughly a third of the cost at thirty days, and the gap keeps widening because the impound bill grows linearly while monthly rental rates do not.
The maths inverts for anything premium. If the equivalent rental runs to several hundred or several thousand dirhams a day, AED 100 a day to have your own car back is trivial. That is why owners of performance and luxury cars almost always pay: there is no substitute at a price that competes, and they would rather be in their own car anyway.
Rent or pay: what the numbers do not say
Cost is the easy half. The half people actually feel is what it is like to drive something that is not yours for a month.
Getting your own car back has real value that never shows up in a table. The seat is where you left it, the mirrors are set, the phone pairs without being asked, the Salik tag is on the windscreen, the child seat is fitted and adjusted properly, and your building’s parking permit is already on the glass. You know the width of the car in a tight multi-storey without thinking about it. There is no deposit held on your card, no mileage cap, no fuel policy to read, and no handover trip at either end. You are back on your own terms rather than adapting to someone else’s car.
Renting has advantages that are not only about price. It buys you the time to fix the underlying fault properly instead of rushing it, which matters because release is conditional on remedying the violation anyway. It hands you a newer car, often a better one than you expected at the price. And it removes the pressure of a deadline: if the tyres, the registration or the licence need a week of admin, a rental means that week is not spent stranded.
The friction is honest and worth naming. A deposit is held against your card. Mileage on a monthly is capped. A child seat is charged per day and has to be refitted. Tolls are usually rebilled with an admin fee. And there is a genuine adjustment period with an unfamiliar car, where the mirrors sit wrong, the indicator stalk is on the other side and the blind spots are not the ones you know. For a week that is an irritation. For sixty days it is your life.
The rule that survives all of this: compare AED 100 a day against renting a car you would actually be content to drive, not the cheapest one on the page. If that car costs less than AED 100 a day, rent. If it costs more, buy the days back. For most economy and mid-range owners the rental wins clearly. For anyone in something they chose deliberately, paying wins just as clearly.
If you leave it there
There is a deadline on the whole thing that almost no guide mentions. Under Article 6 of the decree, where an owner fails to take the necessary action to reclaim an impounded vehicle within three months from the date of impoundment, the vehicle is sold at public auction.
That is how ordinary cars end up on the Dubai Police auction lists, alongside the abandoned cars sold at police auctions. The storage charge accrues at AED 50 a day in the meantime, so the bill grows while the clock runs out. If a car is worth keeping, it is worth dealing with well inside three months.
Getting it done
Impound matters run through the Dubai Police app and website, with the Ministry of Interior also operating a Payment of Vehicle Impound Period e-service. In person, the Dubai Traffic Department handles it. Have the plate number, traffic file number, Emirates ID and driving licence ready.
Clear the fines first, because release will not complete while any are open. Our guide to checking and paying RTA fines covers how to see the full balance, including the Salik and parking charges people forget are sitting on the same file.
Then check how many days are actually left before you pay for any of them.
Frequently asked questions
How do I check whether my car is impounded in Dubai?
Through the Dubai Police app or website, using the plate number or traffic file number. The vehicle enquiry shows the status along with outstanding fines, which matters because those have to be settled before any release goes through.
Can I rent a car while mine is impounded?
Yes. Nothing prevents you renting because your own car is held, and for an ordinary car it is usually the cheaper route. The exception is the one that catches people: if the impound followed an expired licence, you cannot legally rent either until the licence is renewed.
Can I challenge an impound if I think it is wrong?
Yes, and the window is short. Article 7 of Decree 29 of 2015 lets an affected party submit a written grievance to the General Commander within fifteen days of being notified. A committee then decides within thirty days, and that decision is final.
Do the black points disappear when the impound ends?
No. The two are separate penalties for the same violation. Paying to release the car ends the impound only, while the points stay on your traffic file until they expire or are reduced, and 24 of them lead to suspension. Our guide to removing black points in the UAE covers how they clear.
Someone else was driving, so why is my car impounded?
Because the measure attaches to the vehicle rather than the driver. The decree frames release throughout as something the owner pays for and arranges, so the registered owner is the one who has to deal with it whoever was behind the wheel at the time.
Which way you go really does come down to the length. On a short one, paying to be back in your own car by the weekend is usually money well spent, and the work is to clear the fines through our RTA fines guide and put right whatever caused it, whether that is the licence or the registration.
Past thirty days the sums stop being close, and a month of lifts and taxis is its own kind of expensive. Browse monthly car rental in Dubai across the dealer network, from about AED 1,145 a month.
