QFA revamps domestic football by scrapping two leagues, launching QSL 2, and updating foreign player rules for 2026-27.
The Qatar Football Association has approved a major restructuring of domestic competitions ahead of the 2026/2027 season, scrapping two existing leagues and introducing a new second-tier tournament.
In a statement, the QFA Executive Committee confirmed the cancellation of the Olympic League and the Second Division League, with a new competition, Qatar Stars League 2 (QSL 2), set to be introduced from the upcoming season.
The new league will include second division clubs, the Qatar under-23 national team, and selected B teams from first division clubs, subject to meeting participation criteria and coordination with clubs.
The federation said the changes are aimed at strengthening player development pathways and increasing competitiveness across domestic football.
Separately, the QFA outlined revised foreign player regulations for the top-tier Qatar Stars League. First division clubs will be allowed a maximum of five foreign professional players on the field at any time, while also being required to include at least two talented players within the 11 players on the field during matches.
Under the new second-tier structure, QSL 2 teams will be permitted to field up to eight foreign professionals in a matchday XI.
The changes will come into effect from the 2026/2027 season.
