Rheinmetall AG, based in Düsseldorf, and the Spanish technology company Indra Group have today signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to further strengthen their strategic cooperation, particularly in the production of military vehicle systems for the European and Latin American armed forces.
The next step in this defence sector agreement will be to establish a joint venture by the end of this year, with the aim of submitting a strong bid for a Spanish Army contract relating to the procurement of up to 3,000 military trucks. With this move, both companies seek to consolidate their position in the European defence market and respond to the Armed Forces’ new modernisation needs.
Through this agreement, Rheinmetall and Indra intend to expand their existing collaboration and jointly tackle future projects in state-of-the-art defence and security technologies.
Among the priority areas are the modernisation of tracked armoured vehicles, activities in the field of tactical support vehicles, as well as participation in a future solution for tracked infantry fighting vehicles (IFVs). Furthermore, both companies will work together to establish international consortia to participate in strategic opportunities related to the production of logistics trucks.
The agreement goes beyond combat vehicles, covering other key business areas such as space-based communications solutions, the integration of advanced digital systems and the development of new technological capabilities for defence and global security.
The main objective of this memorandum of understanding is to develop innovative solutions for the Armed Forces as a whole, whilst sustainably strengthening the European industrial base in the defence sector. The MoU establishes the framework for closer cooperation across the entire value chain, ranging from integration to production and services, with the aim of improving efficiency, accelerating product delivery and promoting European strategic technological autonomy.
Rheinmetall and Indra will combine their complementary capabilities in key areas such as systems integration, sensor technology, advanced digitalisation, and platform and effector systems, consolidating a strategic partnership with high added value. In this way, the two companies are strengthening their joint position in the European defence market, reaffirming their commitment to expanding and deepening their collaborative projects in the long term.
The CEO of Rheinmetall AG, Armin Papperger, said: “It is a perfect match: Indra is the market leader in Spain and Rheinmetall is the market leader in Germany. We intend to collaborate in the fields of vehicles, satellites, electronics and naval systems. The starting point for this collaboration is the Spanish government’s two tenders for the procurement of up to 3,000 military trucks and several hundred tactical vehicles. We are talking about several billion euros.”
Papperger added: “With this Memorandum of Understanding, Rheinmetall and Indra are sending a clear signal of deeper European cooperation in defence between Germany and Spain. Together, we are combining our technological expertise to develop high-performance, future-oriented solutions for our customers.”
For his part, the CEO of Indra Group, Ángel Escribano, emphasised: “The long-term relationship of trust we have established with Rheinmetall allows us to explore new areas of collaboration to offer increasingly advanced systems, at greater speed, whilst ensuring the future global leadership position of European industry.”
Finally, the CEO of Indra Group, José Vicente de los Mozos, stated: “Indra once again demonstrates its ability to forge strategic alliances that enable us to accelerate the delivery of technological systems demanded by our clients, reaffirming our commitment to Europe and its allies to strengthen the continent’s technological sovereignty and strategic autonomy.”
The signing of this Memorandum of Understanding between Rheinmetall and Indra highlights the shared objective of both companies: to combine their strengths, industrial capabilities and technological innovation in the development of next-generation military vehicle systems. It also seeks to broaden cooperation in the European defence market, with a particular focus on Spain and Germany, as well as to expand opportunities in Latin American countries.
This agreement marks a decisive step towards a more integrated and competitive European defence industry, driving innovation, cross-border collaboration and the creation of high value-added jobs in the sector.
