The third edition of the Spirit of Cultures Festival concluded on Sunday at Bayt Dakira in Essaouira, reaffirming a renewed commitment to peace and intercultural dialogue.
Over three days, the city, known as the City of Winds, hosted discussions, meetings, and performances celebrating the shared spiritual heritage of the three monotheistic religions. The event brought together distinguished diplomatic, cultural, and religious figures to exchange ideas on the challenges of interfaith dialogue and coexistence.
In his address, André Azoulay, advisor to King Mohammed VI and founding president of the Essaouira-Mogador Association, emphasized that the festival is more than just a cultural event—it is an act of resilience.
“At a time when tensions, divisions, and extremism threaten our world, we choose to come together, engage in dialogue, and build bridges instead of walls,” Azoulay stated.
He reminded attendees that throughout the 12th, 13th, and 14th centuries, monotheistic religions engaged in mutual understanding and enlightenment. However, in the 21st century—despite technological advancements—humanity seems to be regressing in terms of unity. “This paradox is alarming and should serve as a wake-up call,” he warned.
Azoulay also highlighted Morocco’s unique role as a model of peaceful coexistence under the leadership of King Mohammed VI, reinforcing its commitment to tolerance and diversity.
Patricia del Pozo Fernández, Minister of Culture and Sports of Andalusia, underscored the importance of preserving “the spirit of Essaouira” beyond the festival days.
“We leave Essaouira changed, enriched from within, carrying new energy and renewed hope,” she said.
A representative of the Islamic Culture and Religious Tolerance Foundation (Spain) also emphasized the significance of the festival as a testament to the Andalusian legacy and the long-standing tradition of coexistence uniting both shores of the Mediterranean.
“Essaouira embodies this shared memory, this bridge between East and West, between cultures and spiritual traditions. More than ever, we bear the responsibility to revive this heritage and make it a foundation for peace and mutual understanding,” he stated.
The closing day featured a seminar on “The Role of Sufi Brotherhoods in Preserving Popular Religious Practices and Strengthening Social Bonds.” Moroccan and international scholars highlighted the historical and contemporary significance of Moroccan zawiyas (religious brotherhoods) and their Spanish Sufi counterparts as pillars of spirituality, social cohesion, and moral and cultural transmission.
Under the theme “Our Shared Spirituality: Between Ethics and Beauty,” this year’s festival also showcased musical and artistic performances celebrating Sufi traditions in Islam, Judaism, and Christianity. These performances reflected the universal language of art and spirituality, reinforcing the festival’s mission to foster cultural dialogue.
Organized in partnership with the Youth of Authentic Art Association for Sama’ and Heritage, the Qadiri Zawiya of Essaouira, the Three Cultures Foundation of the Mediterranean, and the Machado Foundation of Seville, the Spirit of Cultures Festival continues to serve as a bridge between traditions and communities.
Through its rich and diverse programming, the festival solidifies Essaouira’s reputation as a vibrant hub for interfaith dialogue and peaceful coexistence, offering a lasting example of cultural and spiritual unity in an increasingly divided world.
