A visiting U.S. congressional delegation reaffirmed Washington’s recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over its Sahara during a meeting Friday in Rabat with Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita, in a move seen as a signal to the Polisario Front, Algeria and the broader international community.
The talks focused on strengthening Moroccan-American cooperation and advancing geostrategic partnership projects linked to Morocco’s autonomy plan for the disputed territory. The delegation expressed hope that reaffirming U.S. support would encourage greater American investment in Morocco’s southern provinces.
Mohamed Ben Talha Dekkali, a professor of international relations at Cadi Ayyad University in Marrakech, said the message aligns with former President Donald Trump’s 2020 proclamation recognizing Moroccan sovereignty over the Sahara.
“This American confirmation will give the green light for U.S. investments in the southern provinces and cut off the Polisario and Algeria,” Dekkali told Hespress. He added that the international community is increasingly considering designating the Polisario Front a terrorist organization, which could subject it to sanctions.
Abdel Fattah El-Fatihi, a researcher specializing in the Sahara and Sahel, said the congressional visit reflects the implementation of U.S. commitments under the Abraham Accords, including expanding the U.S.-Morocco free trade agreement and boosting investment in the southern regions.
El-Fatihi noted that the visit also highlights deepening U.S.-Morocco cooperation on political and geostrategic fronts, including military and security coordination in the Sahel and broader counterterrorism efforts.
Analysts say the U.S. lawmakers’ support increases pressure on Algeria and the Polisario Front to accept Morocco’s autonomy proposal as the basis for resolving the decades-long dispute.
