Stellantis has decided to cut production capacity at its Melfi plant in Italy by 50%, while simultaneously ramping up output at its Kénitra factory in Morocco, increasing its capacity from 200,000 to 400,000 vehicles per year.
This strategic shift underscores the growing importance of the automotive sector in Morocco, where the company has invested nearly €300 million to enhance production capabilities. In light of these developments, Italian suppliers have been invited to a two-day meeting in Rabat this November, signaling a focus on expanding operations in Morocco.
However, this transition raises concerns in Italy, particularly within the Basilicate region. The employers’ federation, Confindustria Basilicata, revealed that only half of the suppliers in the Melfi supply chain have received new vehicle orders for local production. This situation has sparked anxiety among local unions and officials, including Melfi Mayor Giuseppe Maglione, who fear potential job losses as a result of the reduced activity at the Melfi plant.
