Small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) in Morocco have been hit harder than any other African country by a wave of cyberattacks disguised as legitimate software, according to recent data released by Russian cybersecurity company, Kaspersky Security Network (KSN).
From January to April 2025, cybercriminals used fake versions of popular tools such as ChatGPT, Microsoft Office, and Google Drive to infiltrate company computer systems across the World without detection. The attacks often delivered malware or potentially unwanted applications (PUAs) under the guise of trusted brands.
In Africa, Morocco accounted for 41% of all detected PUAs targeting SMBs, followed by Tunisia (24%), Algeria (16%), Senegal (7%), and Cameroon (7%). Côte d’Ivoire made up the remaining 5%.
Across Europe, Austria saw the highest number of incidents (40%), ahead of Italy (25%) and Germany (11%).
In Morocco and other African markets, downloaders—programs that secretly install additional malicious files—were the most common threat, representing 55% of all detections, followed by dangerous objects (14%) and Trojans (13%).
“Small businesses face enterprise-level threats, often with startup-level budgets,” said Marc Rivero, Lead Security Researcher at the Global Research and Analysis Team (GreAT) at Kaspersky. “The key is knowing where to focus their limited resources for maximum protection. The best defense against sophisticated malware isn’t the most expensive tool—it’s understanding how attackers think and closing the doors they’re looking for.”
