Gold prices edged lower on Monday after hitting record highs in the previous session, as investors moved to lock in profits and the US dollar firmed slightly. The pullback came despite ongoing geopolitical risks and expectations of US interest rate cuts, according to Investing.com.
Spot gold was down 1.3% at USD 4,742.55 an ounce by early trading on Monday, while US gold futures for February delivery slipped 1.3% to USD 4,494.80. The decline followed last week’s rally that saw prices surge to historic levels.
Gold’s strong performance in 2025 has been driven largely by growing expectations that the Federal Reserve will cut interest rates further next year. Markets are increasingly pricing in faster monetary easing in 2026 as inflation cools. The metal is up more than 72% so far this year, supported by central bank buying, Exchange-Traded Fund (ETF) inflows, geopolitical instability, and demand for protection against currency volatility.
However, prices eased on Monday after US-led talks aimed at ending the war in Ukraine failed to deliver a clear breakthrough. While any lasting reduction in global tensions could weigh on gold, recent developments have so far fallen short of easing investor caution.
Silver prices saw a sharper reversal. Futures fell 2.3% to around USD 75.34 an ounce after briefly surging to fresh record highs above USD 82. Spot silver dropped as much as 4.5% during the session, as traders took profits following the recent rally.
Platinum also retreated, with spot prices down 5.7% after touching a record high earlier in the day, while copper futures slid 2.1% to USD 5.71 a pound.
