British energy giant BP announced on Thursday that it has shipped the first cargo of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the Sengal-Mauritania maritime offshore border project “Greater Tortue Ahmeyim,” officially marking the African countries’ entry into the global gas market.
BP confirmed the shipment loaded safely from the project’s Phase One facilities and highlighted its significance as a new energy supply for international markets.
“This first cargo underscores the status of Mauritania and Senegal as LNG-exporting nations,” BP said in a statement.
The project’s first phase is expected to produce around 2.4 million metric tons of LNG annually. While much of the output will serve global energy demand, both Senegal and Mauritania will retain a portion of the production for domestic use.
BP leads the development alongside American company Kosmos Energy, Senegal’s national oil company Petrosen, and Mauritania’s Société Mauritanienne des Hydrocarbures. The consortium began operations at the gas field in December 2024.
The Greater Tortue Ahmeyim field holds an estimated 25 trillion cubic feet of natural gas. Project leaders expect annual production to reach up to 2.5 million tons in the coming years, placing Senegal and Mauritania on the map as emerging players in the global energy landscape.
