More than 120 millionaires based in the U.K. have urged the newly appointed Prime Minister Andy Burnham to raise taxes on extreme wealth, arguing that richer households should help fund public services and reduce inequality, according to Al Jazeera.
Patriotic Millionaires UK organized the “Proud to Pay” letter, which former England football player Gary Lineker, actor Julia Davies, filmmaker Richard Curtis, novelist Val McDermid, and other wealthy signatories backed.
“Tax us,” the group told Burnham, arguing that the U.K. has concentrated wealth and power among too few people, according to the Independent.
Lineker said ordinary people already pay more than many can afford and called fair taxation “a basic British value.” Burnham has indicated that his government is considering asking wealthier households to contribute more, but Treasury Chief Secretary Emma Reynolds said ministers would announce any major tax changes in a budget.
Economists Gabriel Zucman and Ben Tippet estimate that a 2% minimum annual tax on households with more than £10 million ($13.3 million) in wealth could raise about £24 billion ($32 billion) every year, according to Fortune.
