The Xiaomi SkyNomad went on sale in China on 7 September, and it is a more interesting car for this region than the SU7 or the YU7 ever were. Not because it is faster. Because it is not electric-only.
Four versions, all extended-range: a petrol engine on board that never drives the wheels, existing only to generate electricity when the battery runs down. The flagship quotes 1,705 km of combined range. That is Dubai to Riyadh and most of the way back, without planning a single charging stop.
It is also the debut car for the Dragonscale battery, the pack Xiaomi announced two days earlier with the boldest fire guarantee any carmaker has written.
You cannot buy a SkyNomad here yet. Xiaomi calls it China-only for now, with Europe targeted next year and no mention of the Gulf.
Put that in context, though. Xiaomi has no brand dealership in the UAE either, and its cars are here in numbers anyway: the YU7 Max is on our listings today because the dealer network brought it in. An absent dealership is not an absent car, and the SkyNomad will most likely arrive the same way.
What Xiaomi actually launched
SkyNomad is Xiaomi’s second product line, sitting alongside the SU7 sedan and YU7 SUV. Four variants, two body sizes.
| Variant | Seats | Price (yuan) | Electric range | Combined range |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| N70 Pro | 5, rear-drive | 209,900 | 351 km | 1,351 km |
| N70 Max | 5, all-wheel drive | 239,900 | 505 km | 1,461 km |
| N90 Max | 7 | 269,900 | 464 km | 1,705 km |
| N90 Max Studio | 7, pop-up roof | 299,900 | 464 km | 1,705 km |
The N70 is 4,960 mm long on a 2,950 mm wheelbase. The N90 stretches to 5,285 mm on a 3,080 mm wheelbase, which puts it in Land Cruiser territory for length and gives it a genuine third row rather than a token one.
Both use the same range extender: a 1.5-litre engine from Dongan, a Changan subsidiary, making 112 kW. It is a generator, not a driveline. The wheels are always turned by electric motors.
The Studio version is the one that will get photographed most. It carries an electrically operated pop-up roof cabin, the kind normally bolted on by an aftermarket outfitter, fitted at the factory for 30,000 yuan over the standard N90 Max.
Why extended range is the format that suits this country
Battery-electric cars have one weakness in the Gulf, and it is not the heat. It is the long empty drive.
An electric car is excellent for Dubai to Abu Dhabi. It gets harder for Dubai to Salalah, or a summer run into Saudi Arabia, or anywhere the charging map thins out and the ambient temperature is working against the pack the whole way. People here drive those distances casually.
An extended-range car answers that without asking the owner to change anything. You run it as an electric car for the daily 400 km or so, plug in at home, and the engine only wakes up on the long trip. There is no range anxiety to manage because there is a fuel tank behind the problem.
This is the same argument already selling the AITO M9 here in real numbers, and the reason XPeng built extended-range versions of the G9L alongside the pure-electric ones. The category is converging on it.
Read the range figures with some scepticism, though. CLTC is an optimistic test cycle, and 1,705 km assumes a full tank and a full battery at the start. The honest way to use these numbers is comparatively, not literally.
The Dragonscale problem follows the car
The SkyNomad is the first car to carry Xiaomi’s Dragonscale battery, and with it the lifetime guarantee that Xiaomi will replace the entire car if the pack ever catches fire through a fault of its own.
It is the most generous battery promise in the industry. It is also written so tightly that no UAE buyer can currently claim any of it. First owner only, private use only, active connected-services subscription, and servicing inside Xiaomi’s own network. Xiaomi has appointed no distributor for cars in this country, so that network does not exist here.
If SkyNomads eventually arrive the way SU7s and YU7s did, through independent importers, they will arrive with the same asterisk. The battery will be the same battery. The guarantee will not travel with it.
What it would cost here, and why that number is misleading
The temptation is to convert the Chinese prices and get excited. At today’s rates the N70 Pro is roughly AED 115,000 and the N90 Max Studio roughly AED 164,000.
Do not plan around those figures. A Chinese domestic price is not a landed UAE price. Shipping, customs duty, VAT, homologation and the importer’s own margin all sit between the two, and on parallel-imported Chinese EVs the gap has typically been substantial rather than marginal. The converted number is a floor that nobody actually pays.
The useful comparison is what the same money buys from cars that are already here with someone standing behind them. A Lynk & Co 900 starts at AED 255,000 through an appointed distributor with a manufacturer warranty and Gulf-specific cooling. That is a different proposition to a converted price on a car with no local address.
If you want a Xiaomi in the UAE today
There is no SkyNomad here and there is no announced plan to bring one. What is here are the cars Xiaomi already sells in China and importers already bring in.
We currently list used Xiaomi cars for sale in Dubai, mostly SU7 and YU7 variants, all of them arriving through independent importers. Every question in our Dragonscale piece applies to them: who honours the warranty in writing, who opens a high-voltage pack if it fails, whether the software still updates in this market, and what it will be worth in three years.
None of that makes them bad cars. The YU7 Max in particular is quicker than things costing twice as much. It means you are buying the car, not the manufacturer relationship behind it.
What to watch next
Three things would change this picture.
A Xiaomi distributor appointment in the GCC. This is the one that matters. Everything else, warranty, service, software, resale, follows from it.
European launch execution next year. Xiaomi has said Europe is the next market. How that goes will tell you a great deal about how ready the company is to support cars outside China.
Whether importers start bringing SkyNomads. They almost certainly will, because they brought everything else. The question is how quickly, and at what markup over the converted price.
Questions people are asking
Can I buy a Xiaomi SkyNomad in the UAE?
No. It launched in China on 7 September 2026 and Xiaomi has described it as China-only for now, with Europe next. There is no UAE distributor and no announced timeline.
Is the SkyNomad electric or petrol?
Both, in a specific sense. It is an extended-range electric vehicle. The wheels are driven only by electric motors, and a 1.5-litre petrol engine acts as a generator to recharge the battery on long trips.
What is the difference between the N70 and the N90?
Size and seating. The N70 is a five-seat car at 4,960 mm. The N90 is a seven-seat car at 5,285 mm with a longer wheelbase and a usable third row.
Does the SkyNomad get the Dragonscale battery guarantee?
In China, yes. The guarantee requires a first owner, private use, an active connected-services subscription and servicing within Xiaomi’s network, so it does not currently reach buyers in markets Xiaomi does not officially serve.
How does the 1,705 km range figure compare to real driving?
It is a CLTC figure with a full tank and a full battery, so treat it as a comparative number rather than a promise. The electric-only figures, 351 km to 505 km, are the ones that describe daily use.
