Morocco is bracing for three significant challenges in its economic landscape over the next few years:
-
Boosting Productivity: Enhancing productivity is crucial for driving economic growth. The OECD has emphasized the need for Morocco to increase private investment and tackle corruption, as many businesses report engaging in bribery to facilitate their operations.
-
Job Creation: With a staggering 67.6% of its workforce employed in the informal sector, Morocco faces a pressing need to create sustainable and formal job opportunities. High unemployment rates affect especially the youth and women. Key recommendations include lowering taxes and social security burdens, tightening labor inspections, and improving educational access and participation of women in the workforce.
- Climate Change and Water Scarcity: Morocco is particularly susceptible to climate change, facing challenges such as rising temperatures and water stress. The nation aims for carbon neutrality by 2050, underscoring the importance of comprehensive strategies that include carbon pricing. To promote sustainable water use, the study advocates for a gradual increase in water prices.
Looking ahead, the OECD forecasts a 4% economic growth for Morocco in the coming year, an improvement from the 3.5% projected for the end of the current year. This growth is expected to be fueled by rising investments and robust exports. Additionally, the budget deficit is anticipated to decrease from 4% this year to 3.5% by 2025, along with stabilizing government debt at around 70% of GDP. Inflation is on track to meet the target of 2% next year.
Ahmed Reda Chami, president of the Economic, Social, and Environmental Council, suggests that leveraging Morocco’s natural resources—such as its vast coastline, burgeoning digital economy, strategic geographical location, and local market—could potentially elevate the growth rate to 6%. However, realizing this potential hinges on effective sector-specific strategies and the establishment of collaborative industrial working groups that engage both public and private sectors.
In summary, while Morocco’s economic outlook shows promise, addressing these key challenges will be essential for sustainable growth and improved living standards.
