The Moroccan documentary (Y)our Mother, directed by Samira El Mouzghibati, won Best Arab Feature Documentary at the 6th Amman International Film Festival, Awal Film, which concluded Thursday night.
The film follows El Mouzghibati’s personal journey with her sisters as they confront the emotional fallout of a family tragedy that led to their mother’s marginalization. Through intimate conversations and a family gathering captured on camera, the filmmaker gives their mother a voice, revealing untold stories and long-buried wounds.
Born in Belgium, El Mouzghibati studied editing and screenwriting at the INSAS film school in Brussels and has worked on various fiction and documentary projects across Europe and North Africa.
The festival also honored Tunisian director Lotfi Achour’s Les enfants rouges with the Black Iris Grand Prize for Best Fiction Feature. Danish-Palestinian filmmaker Mahdi Fleifel’s To a Land Unknown won both the Jury Prize and Audience Award.
A total of 60 films from 23 countries were screened under the theme “An Unscripted World.”
