Morocco has once again broken its own national record for asparagus exports. From July 2024 to May 2025, the country exported 968 tons of asparagus worth USD 6.6 million, EastFruit reported, citing data from Morocco’s Office des Changes. That’s a 47% increase from the previous season.
The asparagus sector, while still small compared to Morocco’s dominant tomato and bell pepper exports, has grown steadily for four consecutive seasons. Over the past five years, the average annual growth rate in asparagus exports has been around 70%.
The peak of Morocco’s asparagus exports traditionally falls in March and April. However, this past season saw a shift. Thanks to modern agricultural technologies, the export window extended into May, and significant export volumes were also logged as early as October.
Belgium became the largest importer of Moroccan asparagus this past season, accounting for over 62% of total exports. After a dip the previous season, exports to Spain picked up again, maintaining Spain’s place as the second-largest market. Exports to France and the UK have been steady. No shipments went to the Netherlands this year.
Morocco is also pushing into new markets. The 2024/25 season saw the first asparagus exports to the UAE, Canada, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey. The UAE quickly rose to become one of the top three destinations.
In total, Moroccan asparagus reached nine international markets this season—up from seven the year before.
Driven by this momentum, Morocco jumped from 19th to 15th in the global asparagus exporter rankings. With its current trajectory, it could climb even higher over the next season.
