Morocco’s potato exports, in steady decline since 2019, have recorded a sharp rebound, with shipments between July 2024 and May 2025 reaching 42,900 tonnes worth 14.9 million dollars, according to agricultural data platform EastFruit.
This marks a fivefold increase compared with the previous season and 1.5 times more than in 2022-2023, although still far below the 2018-2019 record of nearly 100,000 tonnes.
The sector, characterized by pronounced seasonality, suffered a severe setback in 2023-2024 when volumes collapsed to 7,400 tonnes, pushing Morocco from the 28th to the 67th position among global exporters.
EastFruit notes that the recovery was enabled by the lifting of an export embargo on West Africa, imposed by Moroccan authorities to stabilize domestic supply.
Mauritania and Mali reemerged as leading destinations, while Spain, France, Portugal, Côte d’Ivoire and Senegal also increased purchases. By contrast, exports to the Netherlands, Burkina Faso and Niger declined sharply.
