Etihad Airways is set to introduce approximately 10 new routes in the near future, according to insights from the airline’s Chief Commercial Officer, Arik De. The official announcement regarding the new destinations is anticipated in late November.
The airline plans to add nine brand new routes while one destination will be returning to its network. These expansions are made possible by the arrival of new aircraft.
Next year, Etihad will take delivery of its first Airbus A321LR jets, which are designed for medium- and long-haul flights that are not viable for larger aircraft. The A321LRs will enable the airline to reach destinations such as Italy and Thailand from its Abu Dhabi hub.
Etihad’s CCO indicated that the interiors of the new A321LR jets will be unveiled around mid-Q1 2025. There is considerable speculation that the airline may include a premium product similar to what’s offered in widebody aircraft, contributing to a more uniform experience for business travelers on connecting flights. Etihad’s existing A320 and A321 fleets feature an older business class seat design, making this potential upgrade particularly noteworthy.
Competitors like JetBlue, TAP Air Portugal, and Aer Lingus have successfully integrated lie-flat beds in their A321LR cabins, and Etihad might either adopt a similar design or create something unique, leveraging its in-house aircraft interiors division.
Currently, the airline is showcasing a diverse fleet, ranging from smaller A320 planes to the massive A380 superjumbo. This diversity provides a competitive edge, allowing Etihad to serve smaller markets that do not require large aircraft, unlike its competitor Emirates, which operates an all-widebody fleet that may be less adaptable to varying demand.
Etihad’s recent resurgence and growth strategy, called ‘Journey 2030,’ spearheaded by CEO Antonoaldo Neves, aims to significantly expand the airline’s capacity and market presence by the end of the decade. As part of this initiative, the airline is actively soliciting proposals from airports looking to join the Etihad network.
Additionally, a major event is planned for mid-Q1 2025, marking a brand refresh that reflects the airline’s bold ambitions. Enhancements to onboard Wi-Fi services are also on the horizon, as in-flight connectivity becomes increasingly critical in the industry. With airlines like United and Delta making significant moves in this area, Etihad is poised to elevate its onboard experience for travelers.
Stay tuned for more details, as the full interview with Arik De will be available soon.
