Falcon Energy Materials PLC, a UAE-based graphite mining firm, has joined forces with China’s Hensen Graphite & Carbon Corporation to set up an anode plant in Morocco, focusing on the production of coated spherical purified graphite (CSPG).

The partnership is set to develop a process flow sheet that meets high-quality standards and emphasizes transparency and sustainability. They will work alongside Tanger Med Engineering SA and Dorfner Anzaplan GmbH to perform a preliminary economic assessment (PEA) that aligns with National Instrument 43-101, vital for securing financing and advancing the construction of the Anode Plant.

The PEA, anticipated to be published in the last quarter of 2024, will assess the project’s economic viability and assist in discussions with potential investors and local authorities. It aims to outline plans for the annual production of 25,000 tonnes of CSPG and will address product qualification for end-users.

This development is occurring during an influx of investments in Morocco’s clean energy and electric mobility sectors. Recently, China Baoan, in conjunction with its subsidiary Betrui, announced a $370 million investment in a new project at Tanger Science and Technology City, targeting an output of 60,000 tonnes of anode material per year. This builds on Betrui’s prior initiatives in the region, underscoring Morocco’s enhanced role in the global lithium battery landscape.
