Conflicting reports about Morocco’s voluntary tax settlement program have sparked debates among citizens and online as the initiative’s December 31 deadline passed. The program allowed individuals to regularize undeclared incomes and assets, but the government has yet to release official figures.

Speculation about the amounts collected has ranged from 50 billion to 100 billion dirhams, but no confirmation has come from the General Directorate of Taxes or the Ministry of Economy and Finance. Efforts by local media to obtain clarification have been unsuccessful.

The tax authority previously stated that participants must declare assets, pay a 5% contribution, and that declared amounts would not face additional audits. However, widespread misinformation has cast doubt on the initiative’s outcomes.

Accounting expert Mehdi El Faqir urged patience, cautioning against reliance on unofficial figures. “This process is a key part of the government’s broader tax reform efforts, but it has been overshadowed by unfounded rumors,” he said.

Anas Zouiten, a tax expert, called for enhanced communication and transparency from government and financial institutions. “Clear public awareness campaigns are vital to ensure taxpayers understand their rights and obligations,” he noted, emphasizing the importance of fostering trust and building “true tax citizenship.”

Despite challenges, experts view the settlement as a critical step in Morocco’s fiscal reform agenda, aimed at boosting compliance and reconciling citizens with the tax system.
