Mexico could generate up to 200 billion Mexican pesos (around USD 11.3 billion) from the 2026 FIFA World Cup by extending the tournament’s economic impact beyond host cities and boosting domestic tourism and consumption nationwide, Mexican outlet “ABC Noticias” reported.
The estimate triples the official projection of 65 billion Mexican pesos (USD 3.68 billion) tied to the event, according to the Confederation of National Chambers of Commerce, Services and Tourism, known as “Concanaco Servytur.”
President of the organization, Octavio de la Torre, said the World Cup, to be co-hosted with Canada and the US, offers an opportunity to activate local economies across Mexico through community tourism, cultural events, gastronomy, and commercial activities linked to the influx of visitors.
De la Torre said the tournament should function as a national platform rather than a series of matches limited to Mexico City, Guadalajara, and Monterrey. He said surrounding regions, tourist corridors, and cities hosting training camps could also benefit if authorities coordinate with local businesses.
The strategy involves state and municipal governments and small and medium-sized enterprises connected to tourism, trade, and services, De la Torre said.
In Monterrey, local officials await FIFA decisions that could expand the city’s role in the tournament. Alejandro Hütt, Monterrey’s Host City Manager, said Estadio Universitario, home of Tigres, still has a chance to serve as a World Cup training venue.
FIFA plans to announce its decision on the training location by the end of January, Hütt said, adding that organizers will attend a final workshop for the 16 host venues in Miami next week.
At present, El Barrial serves as Monterrey’s only confirmed training site and is expected to host Tunisia, according to Hütt.
