Italian Automotive giant Fiat’s Grande Panda plant is ramping up production in Kragujevac, Serbia, where Stellantis, is turning to Moroccan and Italian workers to meet demand as other European plants experience slowdowns, “Italian Fashion” reported.
At the Kragujevac plant, 300 Moroccan workers are reinforcing assembly lines to launch night shifts in early October. Around 100 arrived in late August, and an additional 200 are expected by the end of September or early October. Their arrival is critical for full-scale production of the new Grande Panda.
The local workforce has fallen short. With wages at about EUR 600 a month, many Serbs refused to take the jobs, leaving Stellantis searching abroad. Morocco provided a quick solution, but the presence of foreign labor is unpopular in Serbia.
Italian workers are also on-site. Stellantis brought in 150 from Pomigliano d’Arco, Melfi, and Atessa. They are training and supervising new recruits to ensure production quality and stabilize the ramp-up.
The plant currently operates two shifts that turn out about 350 cars daily. With the night shift, Stellantis expects output to climb and make the Grande Panda a key model in the Fiat lineup.
The situation in Serbia contrasts sharply with the rest of Europe. Stellantis is cutting back operations in Italy, France, and Spain. In Pomigliano d’Arco, Panda production will halt for a week, and the Alfa Romeo Tonale line will shut down for two weeks.
In Poissy, 2,000 workers will move to short-time work [WHAT IS THAT? shortened workday schedules?] from mid-October to early November, while Madrid has announced 14 days of short-time work. The company said the measures respond to weak market demand and high stock levels at the end of the year.
The Grande Panda is central to Fiat’s strategy. The model comes in hybrid and electric versions, along with a new gasoline-only version. Its performance in the market will shape the future of the Italian brand within Stellantis’s portfolio.
