Morocco’s Minister of Industry and Trade, Ryad Mezzour, met with Bangladesh’s Foreign Minister, Shama Obaed, in Rabat on Tuesday to discuss a possible free trade agreement as part of her visit to Morocco this week, according to Views Bangladesh.
They discussed expanding cooperation in agriculture, information technology, AI, industrial training, and innovation.
Mezzour said Morocco plans to send a business delegation to Bangladesh before the end of 2026.
Obaed pointed to Bangladesh’s improved investment climate and proposed exchanges of business delegations to increase commercial ties.
Obaed also met with Morocco’s Foreign Minister, Nasser Bourita, ahead of the second ministerial conference on peacekeeping. Obaed said that in Bangladesh, under the leadership of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, her country is pursuing stronger relations with African countries.
The two ministers agreed to boost cooperation in trade, textiles, pharmaceuticals, ceramics, sports, culture, agriculture, education, women’s empowerment, and shipbuilding.
The officials also supported stronger coordination in multilateral forums and agreed to hold the next Foreign Office Consultations in Bangladesh’s capital of Dhaka.
Current bilateral trade between Bangladesh and Morocco totals about $1.15 billion. Bangladesh exports about $81 million to Morocco and imports roughly $1.07 billion, mainly due to phosphate purchases. Officials said a free trade agreement could help reduce the trade imbalance.
