A Moroccan economic delegation led by Morocco’s Secretary of State for Foreign Trade Omar Hejira is in Egypt to strengthen the Kingdom’s commercial and business relations with the country with the second-largest economy in Africa, Morocco’s Press Agency (MAP) reported.
At the Egypt-Morocco Investment and Trade Forum in Cairo on Sunday, Hejira said that the Kingdom’s goal is for Egypt and Morocco to transition from rivalry to “economic complementarity.” Under the leadership of King Mohammed VI, Morocco is working to open new horizons in cooperation with Egypt, he said. He suggested that working in tandem is the most effective way to respond to global trade challenges, to build a competitive regional economy, and to turn common challenges into opportunities.
The Moroccan delegation includes top companies that seek to strengthen economic ties between Rabat and Cairo. Trade between the two countries was USD 1.1 billion in 2024. Moroccan exports, however, were only 6 percent of Egypt’s total imports, which Hejira described as a “serious imbalance” that must be addressed.
He pointed to Morocco and Egypt’s intentions already indicated by King Mohammed VI and President Abdel Fattah Al-Sissi to make the scope of their economic partnership as deep as their historic political ties. The visit of Egypt’s Minister of Investment and Trade, Hassan El-Khatib to Morocco on February 27 this year pushed efforts by both countries to adopt practical steps to facilitate trade exchanges.
El-Khatib said Egypt is committed to removing all barriers that limit Moroccan exports to Egyptian markets. He added that the Cairo forum reflects a common political will to renew cooperation in the face of global uncertainty.
He called for additional efforts to increase trade volume and tackle the obstacles faced by exporters and importers. Both sides are expected to fully leverage the agreements already in place to improve performance and results.
Organized by the Moroccan Exporters’ Confederation and the General Confederation of Moroccan Enterprises, in coordination with the Secretariat of State for Foreign Trade, the Moroccan trade mission seeks to raise Morocco’s exports to Egypt to USD 500 million by 2026.
Held under the theme “A Broad Economic Partnership,” the Cairo forum is providing a platform for exploring investment opportunities and creating lasting partnerships. Key Moroccan sectors represented include agriculture, food processing, automotive, electricity, electronics, textiles, seafood, energy and renewables, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and construction.
The forum kicked off Sunday in Cairo with government officials, business leaders, and entrepreneurs from both countries in attendance. It runs through May 5.
