Morocco is set to face on April 9 a 10 percent tariff on all imports into the United States, announced US president Donald Trump during a press conference.
Key sectors like agro-food, fertilizers, semiconductor devices, and motor vehicles are likely to see the biggest impact as Trump’s Trump’s dislike for free trade and pursuit of protectionism and high tariffs are set to strip away advantages several countries, including Morocco, enjoyed as part of the free trade agreements shared with the US.
Since the implementation of the U.S.-Morocco Free Trade Agreement (MAFTA) in 2006, total bilateral trade has more than quadrupled, increasing from approximately $1.3 billion in 2006 to $5.5 billion in 2023.
Morocco’s trade deficit with the United States rose from less than $1 billion in 2006 to around $1.8 billion in 2023, a figure set to rise after Trump announced the most significant U.S. protectionist trade action since the 1930s.
Britain, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Egypt are facing the same 10 percent rate, while neighbors Tunisia and Algeria saw respective 55% and 30% import duties.
The U.S is already launching global trade into chaos, with some of the supply chains created by the world’s biggest companies and factories expected to be broken after the tariffs are imposed.
The duties, Trump said Wednesday, will force “foreign countries to pay for the privilege of access to our market.”
