Morocco is emerging as one of Africa’s strongest-rated economies as investor confidence in the continent shows signs of improving, according to Bloomberg, citing comments from the African Development Bank (AfDB).
Morocco joined a small group of African nations with investment-grade status after receiving an upgrade from S&P Global Ratings last year.
The rating reflects confidence in Morocco’s economic management and reform efforts, making it more attractive to international investors.
According to Bloomberg, AfDB President Sidi Ould Tah said more African countries could move closer to investment-grade ratings by next year as governments continue implementing reforms and improving public finances.
Morocco’s position stands out because of its diversified economy. Unlike many countries that depend heavily on a single export or sector, Morocco draws growth from industries including automotive manufacturing, aerospace, agriculture, tourism and renewable energy.
The country has also invested heavily in infrastructure, expanding ports, highways and industrial zones that have helped boost exports and attract foreign companies.
According to the report, stronger sovereign ratings can lower borrowing costs for governments and make it easier to finance development and infrastructure projects.
Investor risk premiums on African debt have already fallen in recent months, a sign that markets are becoming more optimistic about the region’s outlook.
The trend is not limited to Morocco. Bloomberg reported that South Africa received a one-notch upgrade in November, while Nigeria’s rating was raised in May. Ghana, Zambia, Kenya and Côte d’Ivoire have also benefited from improved outlooks linked to fiscal reforms and debt-management efforts.
Tah said he expects African countries to receive better ratings in the coming years as economic conditions improve and reform programs continue.
According to the AfDB, Africa’s economy is expected to grow by 4.4% next year, provided global conflicts do not cause further disruptions to energy markets and international trade.
