Morocco is advancing plans to build a one billion dollar liquefied natural gas hub on its Mediterranean coast, launching a tender for a floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) to be stationed at the new Nador West Med port.
Operations are expected to begin next year. The government is also seeking companies to build and operate new pipelines linking the port to major industrial zones, according to Bloomberg.
The project is part of a 3,5 billion dollar national gas plan aimed at increasing annual consumption from 1,2 to 12 billion cubic meters by 2030, following the loss of Algerian supplies in 2021.
The FSRU is expected to cost 273 million dollars, while the pipelines will require 681 million dollars. These infrastructures will connect to the Maghreb Europe pipeline and form the backbone of a future network capable of transporting green hydrogen.
The strategy supports Morocco’s shift away from coal and heavy fuel in industry and the expansion of gas fired power generation, while massive investments in renewables will add 12,5 gigawatts by 2030.
Climate expert Rachid Ennassiri noted that gas will play a limited role alongside the much larger rise in solar and wind capacity.
