Morocco is pushing forward with plans to transform the Guerguerat border crossing in the Moroccan Sahara into a key African trade and logistics hub, parliamentary sources told Hespress Ar.
According to the sources, foreign Minister Nasser Bourita said that the Morocco’s involvement in international transport and logistics agreements seeks to strengthen Guerguerat’s role as a major continental gateway.
Bourita informed lawmakers about ongoing efforts to sign additional agreements that will further establish the crossing as a strategic road link within Africa.
During a recent meeting of the parliamentary committee on foreign affairs, defense, Islamic affairs, migration, and Moroccan expatriates, Bourita highlighted Morocco’s diplomatic push in Laayoune and Dakhla.
The minister pointed out that in recent years, the government has been signing bilateral agreements with several countries in these two cities to send a clear message: Laayoune and Dakhla are just as important as any other Moroccan city, including the capital, Rabat.
Sources told Hespress Ar that Morocco currently has 27 bilateral agreements in place, covering various sectors such as maritime transport with Oman, air transport with Cambodia, and mutual driving license recognition with Spain and Italy.
Other agreements focus on fishing, civil protection, and military cooperation. Bourita also discussed “headquarters agreements” that support the growing international presence in the Moroccan Sahara.
One key development is the establishment of the African Institute for Development in Dakhla, which will join the city’s International Research Center for the Prevention of Child Recruitment.
These organizations enhance Dakhla’s diplomatic standing, especially as the city now hosts 15 consular offices from different countries.
The foreign minister made it clear that these agreements aim to boost Dakhla’s international visibility.
Bourita said that African countries need to view the Moroccan Sahara as a space for economic growth and solutions to continental challenges, rather than as a political issue.
Bourita also spoke about Morocco’s expanding digital footprint, noting the country’s decision to join the founding charter of the Digital Cooperation Organization.
The minister said that Morocco has an important role in shaping digital governance, especially as artificial intelligence rapidly evolves. To reinforce this position, Morocco will actively participate in the AI Summit set to take place in Paris next month.
