The U.S. Ambassador to Morocco, Duke Buchan, met with Morocco’s Minister of Equipment and Water, Nizar Baraka, in Rabat on Friday to discuss water management, infrastructure projects, and expanded economic cooperation between the United States and Morocco, according to a post by the U.S. embassy on X.
The meeting brought together U.S. and Moroccan officials to review ongoing cooperation and explore new opportunities for American participation in Morocco’s infrastructure and water development agenda.
Both sides highlighted a partnership that dates back more than 250 years, anchored in one of the oldest treaties in U.S. diplomatic history, the 1786 Moroccan-American Treaty of Friendship.
U.S. representatives expressed interest in Morocco’s strategic priorities, particularly in water security and large-scale infrastructure. Baraka presented a detailed overview of national projects led by his ministry, including seawater desalination, wastewater treatment, water transfer systems, and broader upgrades to water and port infrastructure.
The minister also outlined major ongoing and planned projects, including the Dakhla Atlantic Port, a flagship initiative tied to Morocco’s southern provinces and its broader economic development strategy. Baraka also cited cross-continental connectivity plans through a potential link across the Strait of Gibraltar, along with investments in public facilities and sports infrastructure.
Moroccan officials encouraged U.S. companies to participate in public tenders and development projects across these sectors. The discussions reflected both countries’ interest in expanding commercial ties and longstanding diplomatic and security cooperation, as they seek to deepen collaboration in areas tied to economic growth and shared development priorities.
