Social strain, rising living costs and climate-related threats are the main risks facing Morocco in 2026, according to the World Economic Forum.
In its Global Risks Report 2026, the forum identifies unemployment and weak economic opportunities as Morocco’s most serious challenge, citing fragile labor conditions, stagnant wages and limited access to quality jobs.
The report warns that persistent underemployment and the erosion of workers’ rights are undermining social stability and constraining long-term growth.
Social risks dominate the list of the five main threats facing the country, accounting for three of the top concerns. After unemployment, inadequate public services and social protection rank second.
The forum points to deficiencies in education, health care, housing, infrastructure and pension systems, saying gaps in these areas increase vulnerability among low- and middle-income households.
Rising costs of basic goods and services are also flagged as a major concern, with the report warning that many households may struggle to maintain living standards as wages fail to keep pace with inflation.
Shortages of food and water resources rank fourth, driven by overexploitation, weak resource management and climate change. Prolonged droughts, the report says, threaten agricultural output and raise concerns about the long-term viability of hydroelectric power generation.
The forum also highlights Morocco’s exposure to extreme weather, noting that outdated drainage systems and insufficient climate-resilient infrastructure leave cities and rural areas vulnerable to heavy rainfall and heat waves. Indirect economic and social damage from such events can outlast their immediate impact, it added.
Inequality in wealth distribution ranks fifth among the major risks, with persistent gaps in income and asset ownership contributing to poverty and uneven development across regions.
Without sustained reforms and targeted public investment, the report warns, Morocco may struggle to convert economic growth into broad-based prosperity in the coming years.
