The UN general assembly, through its Fourth Committee on special political and decolonisation issues, has approved the agenda for its next session and set June 16 and 17, 2026 for two meetings on the Sahara.
The decision was adopted unanimously during a formal meeting held as part of preparations for the eighty first session of the general assembly.
The two sessions are expected to include delegations and political, human rights and economic actors from Morocco’s southern provinces, who plan to present field information on the political, economic, social and human rights situation in the region.
The discussions fall within the Fourth Committee’s mandate to follow issues related to non self governing territories.
The committee also approved Morocco and Algeria’s participation as observers in its work and renewed the mandate of Saint Lucia’s representative, Melissa Rampali, as chair of the Special Committee on Decolonization, known as the Committee of 24, for a second term in 2026.
The committee’s handling of the issue is based on a general assembly resolution adopted in December 2025, which reaffirmed UN support for the negotiating process launched by the security council under Resolution 1754 of 2007 and subsequent resolutions.
The resolution calls for a just, lasting and mutually acceptable political solution, in line with the UN Charter and relevant security council decisions.
It also stresses the need for the parties to show political will and engage in serious negotiations in good faith and without preconditions, praises the efforts of the UN secretary general and his personal envoy, calls for continued cooperation with the International Committee of the Red Cross and respect for international humanitarian law, and requests that the special committee continue monitoring developments and submit a detailed report to the general assembly.
Head of Africawatch, Abdel wahab El Kayen told Hespress that the security council identified Morocco’s 2007 autonomy proposal as the most serious and credible basis for a future political solution and warns that any divergence between the general assembly and the security council could conflict with Article 12 of the UN Charter.
Mena Laghzal, coordinator of a Sahrawi NGO coalition also said the Resolution 2797 marked a break with what she described as a period of stagnation and attempts to frame the issue purely as decolonisation.
She argues that future discussions within the Fourth Committee should align with the framework set by the security council and cautions against using UN platforms to promote what she calls outdated or separatist narratives.
