French Agriculture Minister Annie Genevard said agricultural ties with Morocco have entered a phase of “exceptional cooperation,” as both countries move to expand joint work on livestock, climate adaptation and food security during the 2026 International Agriculture Show in Meknes.
Speaking at the opening of the French pavilion, Genevard described France’s participation as a “milestone” in bilateral relations, reflecting a partnership that now extends beyond institutional cooperation to include companies, research institutes and sector operators.
The 18th edition of the Salon International de l’Agriculture au Maroc (SIAM), held from April 20 to 28, focuses on animal production and sustainable farming, key areas for Morocco as it seeks to rebuild its livestock base and adapt to climate pressures.
Discussions between the two sides have centred on restarting exports of French livestock to Morocco, including both genetic material and live cattle, as part of efforts to strengthen domestic production capacity. French officials said talks on resuming exports of live animals were “advanced,” with expectations of progress in 2026.
The cooperation also extends beyond bilateral trade. Officials said joint initiatives could expand into African markets, including Côte d’Ivoire, focusing on animal health under a “One Health” approach aimed at controlling transboundary diseases and improving food security.
The current phase builds on a broader cycle of exchanges in 2025, when Morocco and France hosted each other as guest partners in major agricultural events, reinforcing institutional and commercial ties.
Agriculture remains a central sector in Morocco’s economy, accounting for a significant share of employment and national output, while facing increasing pressure from drought and climate variability.
At SIAM, the partnership is now shifting toward applied cooperation, combining trade, research and technology as both countries seek to align agricultural systems with sustainability and food sovereignty goals.
