Morocco has called for an immediate ceasefire in Lebanon, emphasizing the need to respect the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity during an International Conference in Support of Lebanon’s People and Sovereignty, held in Paris.
At this conference, convened on the initiative of French President Emmanuel Macron, Moroccan representative Fouad Yazourh highlighted that Lebanon should not bear the weight of conflicts driven by external regional agendas that have ravaged the nation. He praised President Macron’s efforts to organize this important event amid challenging global and regional circumstances, marked by extensive military operations since 2006. Yazourh stated that the Lebanese people deserve to live in peace and stability.
Morocco urges the international community to:
– Facilitate a complete ceasefire under the supervision of the United Nations.
– Ensure the safe return of displaced individuals with necessary protection.
– Provide essential humanitarian aid overseen by Lebanese authorities.
– Support the rebuilding of war-torn areas through collaboration with the international community and Lebanese institutions.
Yazourh reaffirmed the Moroccan vision, guided by King Mohammed VI, underscoring the importance of a permanent solution to the crisis rather than mere management. He acknowledged that the Palestinian question remains at the heart of the ongoing turmoil.
According to Morocco’s perspective, lasting peace in the region relies on a two-state solution, envisioning an independent Palestine, including Gaza, with East Jerusalem as its capital. King Mohammed VI has consistently highlighted that the political deadlock over the Palestinian issue fuels tensions throughout the Middle East.
Reiterating Morocco’s solidarity with the people and government of Lebanon, Yazourh emphasized the urgent need for diplomacy and reason to take precedence. He stated that halting hostilities in Lebanon and Gaza should be the foremost priority, but this must be coupled with a political framework aiming for a just and stable peace across the region.
The conference gathered Lebanon’s partners, alongside representatives from the United Nations, the European Union, and various international and regional organizations, focusing on mobilizing the global community to address Lebanon’s pressing humanitarian needs and enhance support for its institutions, particularly the Lebanese Armed Forces.
