Documents obtained by the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights have revealed that 600 civilians were killed under torture in detention centers operated by the former Syrian regime.
The London-based Observatory, which monitors human rights violations in Syria, said Tuesday that the documents expose “the daily deaths of large numbers of detainees subjected to brutal torture methods in regime prisons.”
In its press statement, the Observatory called the official documents “irrefutable evidence of the crimes, brutality, and horrific abuses suffered by Syrians,” adding that this underscores the moral obligation to hold perpetrators accountable.
The organization further reported that the total number of detainees documented as having died under torture in Syrian regime security prisons since the start of 2024 has now reached 1,700. Among the victims are a political activist, a university student, a writer, an engineer, an American citizen, a resident of Tripoli, and a defected officer.
The findings have renewed calls from human rights advocates for international accountability over atrocities committed during the years-long Syrian conflict.
