Real Madrid President Florentino Pérez defended his board of directors on Tuesday and announced new elections, accusing the media of trying to destabilize the club after a trophyless season, according to a Real Madrid statement.
“I will not resign,” Pérez said at Ciudad Real Madrid. “An organized campaign has targeted this board and me because we did not win this season,” he added.
The 79-year-old president said the current board will run again in the upcoming elections and argued that Real Madrid’s members, not journalists or outside interests, own the club. In his comments, Pérez denied rumors that he suffers from terminal cancer and claimed critics want to weaken both him and the club’s leadership.
Pérez defended his record by listing 66 titles in football and basketball won during his presidency: 37 in football and 29 in basketball, including 7 European Cups in football and 3 European Cups in basketball.
“They say Madrid is in ruins,” Pérez said. “But this is still the most prestigious club in the world.”
Pérez revived criticism of the Negreira refereeing scandal and said Real Madrid prepared a 500-page dossier for UEFA on what he called “the greatest corruption case in football history.”
