A new international study warns that humanity may already be living beyond Earth’s sustainable limits, with researchers arguing that current population levels and patterns of resource consumption are placing mounting pressure on climate systems, food security and ecosystems worldwide.
The research, published in the journal Environmental Research Letters, analyzed more than two centuries of population data and concluded that Earth’s long term sustainable population could be closer to 2.5 billion people under current consumption standards, far below today’s global population of more than 8.3 billion.
Lead author Corey Bradshaw said modern population growth has been sustained largely through fossil fuel dependence and the accelerated depletion of natural resources faster than ecosystems can replenish them.
Researchers found that while global population growth rates began slowing in the 1960s, total population size continues to drive rising carbon emissions, ecological degradation and warming temperatures.
The study projects the global population could peak between 11.7 billion and 12.4 billion people by the late 2060s or 2070s if current trends continue.
