The Moroccan caftan is poised for official inscription on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, after the United Nations agency confirmed that the Kingdom’s nomination file has been technically approved and placed on the agenda of the twentieth session of the Intergovernmental Committee in New Delhi.
The Moroccan dossier, titled “The Moroccan Caftan: Art, Traditions and Skills,” is among fifty four submissions that experts will evaluate in December, including files requiring urgent safeguarding and others proposed as best practices.
If endorsed, the caftan will join seven hundred and eighty eight elements already inscribed by one hundred and fifty countries, including Morocco’s own argan tree, Mediterranean diet, falconry and Arabic calligraphy.
The bid highlights the caftan as a centuries old garment shaped by Arab Islamic, Amazigh and Jewish influences, preserved through highly specialised craftsmanship such as embroidery, brocade weaving, traditional tailoring and “sfifa” cord making.
UNESCO notes that the file demonstrates intergenerational transmission, regional stylistic diversity from Fez to Rabat and the Sahara, and the caftan’s continued reinvention by contemporary designers, a key criterion for recognising living heritage.
The upcoming vote follows intensified cultural diplomacy by Morocco, amid recurring attempts by Algerian institutions and media to claim the caftan as part of their heritage, a narrative widely rejected by Moroccan scholars as lacking historical or technical basis.
UNESCO’s heritage committee takes decisions by consensus or vote. Approval would allow Morocco to reference the listing in its national preservation policies, reinforcing the symbolic and economic value of a garment that has become a global ambassador of Moroccan identity.
