The Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, under UNESCO, today, Wednesday, officially approved the registration of the Moroccan Caftan as a global intangible cultural heritage. The decision was made during the committee’s meeting held in India.
This international recognition honors the efforts of the Kingdom of Morocco, led by King Mohammed VI, who has prioritized the preservation of authentic Moroccan national culture and heritage, according to an official statement from the Ministry of Youth, Culture, and Communication.
Morocco submitted a comprehensive file, prepared by the Ministry and the Permanent Delegation of Morocco to UNESCO in Paris. The file included detailed information highlighting the evolution, aesthetic richness, technical complexity, and enduring social functions of the Moroccan Caftan over centuries.
The Ministry stated that the Caftan is not just a traditional garment; it is a vital, symbolic element of Moroccan cultural identity, transmitted across generations, and widely valued both inside and outside Morocco. The Ministry also praised the artisans and craftspeople who have preserved this heritage.
