Morocco had one of the lowest female labor-force participation rates among middle-income countries in 2024, with women’s economic participation estimated at only 19%, according to a report published by the country’s statistics agency (HCP).
Entitled “Informality, Gender and Aging: Cumulative Inequalities and Intergenerational Effects,” the report said around 70% of working women were employed in the informal economy in 2024, compared with nearly 78% of men.
Women were overrepresented in unpaid family work and non-contributory activities, while men were more likely to be self-employed or have income-generating informal jobs, according to the study.
The HCP warned that low female participation in the labor market weakens the contribution base of the economy and reinforces long-term gender inequalities.
The report also highlighted disparities in pension coverage. Data from Morocco’s 2021 National Employment Survey showed that only 15% of women aged 60 and older received pensions, compared with 37% of men.
Women’s retirement income levels were also significantly lower. The female-to-male ratio stood at 11% in 2020, meaning women received, on average, nearly nine times less than men.
This significant gap reflects the impacts of structural inequalities accumulated over time, including lower access for women to formal employment and higher concentration in informal work, according to HCP.
