Morocco’s Minister of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development, Leila Benali, emphasized the strategic position of Morocco in developing renewable energies during her speech at a roundtable on clean energy, held as part of the 61st Munich Security Conference on Friday.
She highlighted Morocco’s crucial role as an energy corridor at the crossroads of Africa, Europe, and the Atlantic basin.
Benali noted that the 2022 energy crisis, triggered by the Russia-Ukraine conflict and supply chain disruptions, underscored the need for stable partnerships. “Thanks to our strong ties with Europe, we were able to progress despite tensions, demonstrating the resilience and importance of these partnerships,” she stated at the high-level gathering of global renewable energy leaders.
The minister stressed the importance of Morocco, as a key energy corridor in the region, securing long-term contracts for hydrogen and electricity to build a sustainable economic and social system.
She also introduced the concept of the “OTC Corridor,” aimed at ensuring that all production, transportation, and certification processes in Morocco meet sustainability standards. Benali called for a comprehensive approach to sustainability that considers not only environmental factors but also social and economic dimensions.
Reducing energy costs is a strategic objective for Morocco, according to Benali. The country aims to achieve this through economies of scale and significant investments designed to enhance efficiency and strengthen Morocco’s energy competitiveness.
Benali pointed out that with an electrification rate of 99.8%, Morocco is well-positioned to contribute to improving energy access across Africa, where 600 million people still lack electricity.
The 2025 Munich Security Conference, a high-level platform dedicated to addressing major challenges in foreign policy and international security, kicked off on Friday in the Bavarian capital. The event brought together German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, along with heads of state, government officials, diplomats, and experts from around 110 countries.
Running from February 14 to 16, the conference’s main agenda focuses on global security issues, including international governance, the resilience of democracies, and climate security. It also addresses the state of the international order, regional conflicts and crises, and Europe’s role on the global stage.
