The Republic of Zambia on Thursday reaffirmed its support for Morocco’s territorial integrity and sovereignty over the Sahara, while endorsing Morocco’s autonomy proposal as the basis for resolving the regional dispute.
The position was outlined in a joint communiqué issued in Rabat following talks between Nasser Bourita and Mulambo Haimbe, who is currently visiting Morocco on a working trip.
Zambia also welcomed the adoption by the United Nations Security Council of Resolution 2797 on Oct. 31, 2025, which describes Morocco’s autonomy initiative as the framework for a political solution under Moroccan sovereignty.
According to the communiqué, Haimbe expressed support for ongoing United Nations efforts to resolve the dispute and described Morocco’s autonomy plan as “the only credible, serious and realistic solution” to the issue.
He added that the initiative offers a pragmatic and constructive foundation for achieving a lasting and mutually acceptable political settlement.
For his part, Bourita welcomed the strengthening of bilateral relations between Morocco and Zambia in recent years.
He highlighted the opening of Zambia’s embassy in Rabat and its consulate general in Laayoune in October 2020 as an important step in deepening diplomatic cooperation between the two countries.
